La Unión's Mining Park: an exterior route through the Sierra Minera

en Published 10 September 2026

La Unión's mining story is written across an entire coloured sierra, not only underground. The Mining Park brings together nineteenth-century workings on the road toward Portmán: a roasting furnace, powder magazines, mineral vein, washing plant, sludge pond and the entrances of Pablo y Virginia and Agrupa Vicenta.

Why it matters

Silver-lead, iron, zinc and tin extraction reshaped the Sierra de Cartagena-La Unión and drew a dense workforce into hard, dangerous labour. The Camino del 33 carried people and material across the range. Agrupa Vicenta, opened in 1869, later became famous for vast chambers, ochre water and flamenco performances, but its interior is currently closed; the public story must therefore begin with the exterior industrial landscape.

Plan the visit

The council currently describes the park as free exterior access on foot, with no vehicle entry or reservation for the open-air circuit. That makes the surviving structures and scarred geology the visit, not a consolation prize. Heat, uneven ground and unprotected industrial remains demand proper footwear and attention. Never pass a mine gate or barrier.

  • Confirm the current closure status before travelling for an underground visit.
  • Carry water and avoid the exposed route at summer midday.
  • Stay on the interpreted exterior circuit and keep away from shafts and unstable structures.
  • Do not collect minerals or enter workings, however open they appear.
